Real-Time People Counting and Occupancy Monitoring in a Shopping Mall

SensMax TAC-B 3D-W mmWave radar sensors provide real-time people counting and occupancy monitoring for shopping malls. The system tracks how many visitors arrive at each entrance, how footfall changes throughout the day and how many people are inside the mall or specific floors. Accurate live data helps optimize staff schedules, evaluate marketing activities, manage energy consumption and maintain safe and comfortable visitor flows.

Real-time entrance counting and occupancy insights for shopping malls.

Benefits of Radar-Based Footfall Tracking

TAC-B radar sensors use 60 GHz mmWave people counting technology that works without cameras, delivering accurate real-time footfall and occupancy data for every mall entrance. This enables malls to track visitor peaks, optimize security and cleaning schedules, evaluate promotional zones and analyze tenant performance based on real traffic.

  • Large coverage per sensor – up to ~10 m range with a 120° field of view (~100 m²), reducing hardware costs for wide entrances.
  • Flexible installation – mount on a sidewall, column or angled ceiling to match complex entrance designs.
  • Advanced detection – up to 5 virtual counting lines and zones for tracking IN, OUT and directional flows.
  • Anonymous operation – mmWave radar detects people without filming and is fully GDPR compliant.
  • Full integration support – real-time MQTT data, API export or cloud reports for advanced analytics.
  • Real-time delivery – instant Wi-Fi data transfer for live dashboards and occupancy alerts.

How the Solution Works

TAC-B 3D-W sensors are installed at approximately 2.5–3 m height on a sidewall, column or ceiling with a slight downward angle. The radar module detects visitor movement in front of each entrance, classifies direction and counts people in real time. If the internet connection is temporarily unavailable, the sensor stores statistics on an internal SD card and synchronizes them automatically once connectivity returns.

Footfall, Occupancy and Queue Insights

The SensMax cloud portal provides ready-to-use reports showing hourly traffic trends, peak visiting times, floor-level occupancy and multi-entrance analytics. Real-time occupancy dashboards help malls maintain safety limits and react instantly to crowding. Queue detection zones can be configured near elevators, security checkpoints or service points to trigger notifications through email or Telegram for faster staff response.

Business Impact

Real-time counting data lets mall managers act immediately - direct guards to busy entrances, adjust cleaning schedules after peaks, open more service points during rush hours and maintain comfortable visitor density. Historical reports help malls justify rent adjustments, evaluate event marketing, support tenant performance analysis and plan resources with confidence. Automated HVAC control based on occupancy helps reduce energy waste and maintain a stable indoor climate.

Example in Action

A large shopping mall installed TAC-B 3D-W sensors at all main entrances and connected them to the real-time occupancy dashboard. Within the first week, the management team identified strong midday peaks on weekends and shifted cleaning schedules accordingly. Security teams used live data to guide visitors toward less crowded entrances, while HVAC automation reduced energy consumption during quiet hours. Tenants received visitor statistics for evaluating their marketing campaigns, resulting in improved coordination between mall management and store owners.
