SensMax SMX Data Gateway

The SensMax SMX Data Gateway is the central communication hub for SensMax wireless people counting sensors and customer survey buttons. It collects data from connected devices by radio channel and sends it to the SensMax online reporting portal through Ethernet or Wi-Fi.

The gateway is used with standard SensMax S1, D3 and L3 wireless devices when scheduled online reporting is required. It removes the need to connect each sensor by cable and allows multiple wireless counting points to report through one central gateway.

SMX Data Gateway is suitable for retail stores, shopping malls, offices, libraries, museums, public washrooms and other locations where visitor statistics or customer feedback data should be collected automatically and displayed in the online reporting system.

How the SMX Data Gateway Works

SensMax wireless sensors store visitor counting or survey button data and send it to the SMX Data Gateway by radio channel. The gateway then forwards the data to the SensMax online reporting portal through Ethernet or Wi-Fi.

Unlike the SMX TS real-time gateway, the standard SMX gateway is designed for scheduled online reporting. It is suitable when hourly visitor statistics are enough and real-time occupancy monitoring is not required.

If the internet connection is temporarily unavailable, the gateway stores the collected data in its internal memory. When the connection is restored, the gateway automatically sends the stored data to the server.

Ethernet, Wi-Fi and MQTT Integration

SMX Data Gateway supports Ethernet and Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz connectivity. Ethernet has priority when the RJ-45 cable is connected. If Ethernet is not available, the gateway can use the selected Wi-Fi network to connect to the internet.

For integration projects, the gateway supports MQTT data transfer. This allows people counting and feedback data to be connected with third-party dashboards, smart building platforms, BI tools, IoT systems and other external software.

The gateway can be configured through its local settings web page. Users can manage connected sensors, network settings, server settings, MQTT settings, system parameters and gateway status.

Compatible Sensors and Devices

The SMX Data Gateway is used with standard SensMax wireless people counting sensors and customer survey buttons. The selected gateway version must match the radio range class and frequency of the connected devices.

A single SMX Pro gateway supports up to 10 sensors. SMX LR and SMX SLR gateways support up to 30 sensors. For larger buildings or multi-zone sites, several gateways can be used depending on the layout, sensor quantity and radio coverage.

Typical Applications

SensMax SMX Data Gateway is suitable for locations where wireless people counting data should be collected automatically and sent to the online reporting system.

  • Retail stores for visitor traffic reports and conversion analysis.
  • Shopping malls for collecting data from multiple entrances and zones.
  • Libraries and museums for visitor statistics, funding reports and service planning.
  • Public washrooms for usage-based cleaning schedule planning.
  • Office buildings for occupancy trends and facility planning.
  • Customer service points for survey button data and satisfaction reporting.

Business Benefits

The SMX Data Gateway makes wireless people counting projects easier to install and maintain. Sensors can be placed at entrances, corridors, washrooms or service points without running data cables from every device to the server.

Automatic online data transfer reduces manual work and keeps visitor statistics available for reporting. Internal backup memory helps protect the data during short internet outages, while Ethernet and Wi-Fi options give flexibility for different building layouts.

  • connect multiple wireless sensors through one central gateway;
  • avoid cabling between every sensor and the reporting system;
  • send visitor statistics automatically to the online portal;
  • use Ethernet or Wi-Fi depending on local network availability;
  • keep data during temporary internet connection loss;
  • choose Pro, LR or SLR models according to distance and site layout.

Example in Action

A retail chain installs SensMax S1 and D3 wireless people counting sensors at store entrances. Each store uses one SMX Data Gateway to collect data from the sensors and send it to the SensMax online portal.

Managers can review hourly visitor statistics, compare traffic between stores, measure the effect of promotions and prepare regular reports without visiting each sensor manually. If internet service is interrupted, the gateway keeps the stored data and uploads it when the connection returns.
